Saint Louis Cemetery Number One is the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans. The cemetery has above ground tombs for the dead. This it because the high water table in New Orleans makes below ground burials impractical.
Founded in 1789 the cemetery may have as many as 100,000 deceased residents. Most tombs are occupied by a great number of bodies.
One of the most famous residents said to haunt the grounds is Marie Laveau, the noted
Voudou priestess. She may or may not be among those in the Glapion family crypt.
