USA, California, San Diego, The Whaley House

Often rated as one of the ten "most haunted places" in the United States, the Whaley House may be home to a number of ghosts.

"Yankee Jim" James Robinson was hung in 1852 on the spot where the house now stands. The hanging didn't go well, and took much longer to kill Yankee Jim than in a normal hanging. As a result, Jim may still haunt the property. Visitors to the house sometimes fell a strangling sensation, especially in the area of the staircase.

The Whaley's daughter who died at age 11 is said to appear mostly to younger visitors. Some children who visit say that they have been tickled or had their hair pulled by an unseen spirit.

The ghost of a dog, a terrier named Dolly Varden, can sometimes be seen running through a hallway and into the dining room.

In the back garden visitors may see the ghosts of one or more children playing. This may be the ghost of a young girl who is said to have been killed by running into a clothesline and cutting or strangling her neck. I have heard that these ghost are most visible around dusk.

Several other spirits also haunt the house, many of them members of the Whaley family.
