The Beast of Bodmin Moor

Beginning in the 1980s a large black cat has been sighted in the area of Cornwall, England. It has come to be known as The Beast of Bodmin Moor or the Exmoor Cat. The animal's description frequently suggests that it is a real puma or puma-like cat. The wide spread sightings might indicate a breeding group of the animals exists. Indeed, a recent sighting was of a mother and cub together.

While there are no large black cats native to England, one or more may have escaped from captivity. England's strict 1976 Dangerous Wild Animals Act prohibits ownership of a "pet" such as a puma. Because of this, if a puma were to escape it's owner might not report it. While large cat skulls have been found in the area, they may not be related to the Beast of Bodwin Moor. The skulls are likely from cat skins rugs, and not from large feral cats.

The United State's Ozark Howler may be a similar phenomenon.
