An arrangement of large stones in a circle. The positions of the stones typically have some significance astronomically, such as marking Summer and Winter Solstice sunsets. Often there is a large stone lying down, which can mark the most Northerly or Southerly moon rising or setting location in the circle. There are over 1000 stone circles in Great Britain predating 1500 BC. The exact usage for these ancient circles is unknown.
Stonehenge is the best known stone circle.
