Sea Monsters

Sea Monsters are broadly defined as any creatures in the world's seas and oceans which are potentially dangerous to man or ships. You could define sea monsters as being any existing creature known or as yet undiscovered, or only of legend.

Known sea monsters could include such things as giant squid, whales, and even large jellyfish.

Legendary sea monters would include sea serpents.

Hello!

I've always had an interest in sea monsters and a zoologist friend lent me a great book including photographs of a peculiar kind of blob monster which periodically has washed up on Australian beaches. Only last year another blob turned up in Tasmania and made the papers. At first several experts
claimed it was an as yet unidentified sea creature with strange physical characteristics such as a very tough rubberlike consistency (cut only be cut
by scalpel with difficulty) and strange hairs. Several days after initial reports the monster was supposedly discredited and labeled whale blubber. I would have thought little of it had I not just read of these blobs (and seen quite clear photos). I will attempt to dig up the reference for you.

An archeologist friend whilst on a dig in Tasmania saw parts of several sea monsters in the Tasmanian maritime museum (I think there is only one) and also a three metre long head of a giant octopus (who apparently had tentacles 20 metres long) in the Melbourne museum. It sounds quite fantastic, if I can get in to see it I'll let you know.

Anyway, I'm glad I sparked an interest...
