Jim Butcher

Jim Butcher has written a series of books featuring wizard Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Harry Dresden is a wizard living in modern day Chicago, and offering his wizarding services as something of a paranormal PI.

Harry's ad reads:
"Harry Dresden - Wizard
Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations.
Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties,
or Other Entertainment."

Other characters in the books include a talking skull with an encyclopedic knowledge of magic, police detectives, ghosts, werewolves, vampires, magical apprentices, demons, and newspaper reporters.

The Dresden Files was made into a tv series by the Sci-Fi channel for just one season of 12 episodes in 2007. It starred Paul Blackthorne as Harry Dresden, Valerie Cruz as Lt. Murphy, and Terrence Mann as Bob. There are a number of differences between the characters in the books and series, most notably that Bob can become a human form. As the Dresden Files books were written as books, and not as screenplays for a one hour television series, it isn't surprising that some adaptions had to be made such as a corporeal Bob or having a Jeep Wrangler (easy to film) instead of an old VW Beetle (hard to film). I have no idea why the staff became a hockey stick.

Jim Butcher's bio from the 2008 San Diego Comic Con International program:

Jim Butcher is a martial arts enthusiast with 15 years of experience in various styles, including Ryukyu Kempo, Tea Kwan Do, Gojo Shorei Ryu, and a sprinkling of Kung Fu. Hi is a skilled rider and has worked as a summer camp horse wrangler and has performed in front of large audiences in both drill and stunt riding exhibitions.

Jim enjoys fencing, singing, bad science fiction movies, and live action gaming. He lives in Missouri with his wife, his son, and a vicious guard dog.

Jim goes by the moniker "Longshot" in a number of online forums. He came by this name in the early 1990s when he decided to become a published author. Usually only 3 in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those only 1 in 10 make enough money to call it a living. He made his start with Storm Front, published by New American Library in 2000. This was the first book in what became the bestselling Dresden Files series. The sale of a second series, the Codex Alera, was the breakthrough that let him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.

(Jim Butcher's appearance at Comic-Con was Co-Sponsored by Dabel Brothers.)
