Day of the Dead or Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday to honor the dead, especially those who have died in the past year. During the holiday the spritis of ancestors are said to visit the earth.
The holiday is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It is a national holiday in Mexico and a public holiday in Brazil.
Symbols of the day of the dead include sugar skulls and marigolds.
Sugar skulls and other treats are set out to feed the visiting sprits. Some of the favorite foods or items of deceased relatives or friends are often set out for their spirits.
Marigolds are called Flor de Muerto or Flower of the Dead. Their strong scent is said to guide the spirits home.
