Azores Islands

A small group of islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. They are loceted about 900 miles from Portugal and 2400 miles from North America. The island chain is just under 400 miles long, with nine major islands in the group.

The islands are claimed by Portugal.

While these islands are fairly small, they are actually the tops of some of the largest underwater mountains on the planet.

Sometimes said to be all that is left of the lost continet of Atlantis.

In some renditions of the The Bermuda Triangle or Devil's Triangle the Azores form an Eastern boundary.

I never realized that there was so much interest in the Azores islands, Atlantis connection. I was born there in the sixties. Great place to vacation.

Just wanted to share an interesting story from my grandfather. He was born before the year 1900, and he described to the family an event that happened every 100 yrs on the island of Sao Miguel. This information was passed on from generation to generation. On the island of Sao Miguel, near the capitol city if Ponta Delgada, on a certain day of the year, a piece of an island or mountain would rise out of the ocean between Sao Miguel and Terceira and could be seen from land. On the same day many people witnessed a figure of a man (looking like a fierce king) riding a white horse coming out of the water and riding along the shoreline, and then riding back out to sea. Hundreds of people have witnessed this incident. It is also said that there were originally 10 islands, but sometime around the 15th century, an island between the same 2 mentioned islands disappeared beneath the ocean's surface. During my visits to the islands, I have heard this same story from different people.
