Atlantis is sometimes referred to as "The Lost Continent".
Ancient Greek writer Plato described a lost continent of Atlantis in his works Timaeus and Critias. Plato mentioned Atlantis briefly in Timaeus, but goes into great detail in Critias. Plato described Atlantis as a veritable paradise. Atlanteans were mechanically and horticulturally advanced, far ahead of surrounding cultures. However, the culture abruptly ended when Atlantis sank under the ocean.
Today, people continue to be fascinated by Atlantis. It is unknown exactly where Atlantis was or if it even ever really existed. Many experts feel that Atlantis was really the Minoan island of Thera. Thera was in the Aegean Sea, very near Plato's Greece. Minoan culture was very advanced, and has many parallels to Atlantis. Thera was destroyed by a volcanic explosion, hastening the demise of Minoan culture. While Thera may not have been Atlantis, elements of Thera may have influenced Plato's story.
It is possible that the
Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean are the tops of mountains from the sunken continent.
Seer Edgar Cayce predicted that Atlantis would be found in the late 1960s. In 1968-69 mysterious underwater structures were discovered in the Caribbean Sea.
In the 1980s writer Charles Berlitz gave Atlantis new interest with his books on the subject.
Some feel that Extraterrestrials were involved with Atlanteans having such an advanced civilization.
